Day by day
Twelve days for two people, with two nights in every place and no obligation to get up early each morning. This is not the tour of the monuments: it is the tour of the places where you sit and look at the water, at the pace of people who have just got married.
The rule of this itinerary is simple and rarely appears on any programme: two nights per place, a free morning every second day, and never two early starts in a row. After Yangshuo, Shanghai; after Shanghai, Hangzhou and Macau. It is not about seeing more, it is about not arriving tired at places that ask for slowness.
The mornings with a programme can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and each has a reason: dawn on the Li River happens before the boats start, and therefore requires waking at 4:30. In exchange, the days that follow are of still water, tea and afternoons without a clock. It is also because the tour is private, with only two people, that these choices work: the guide fits the day to what was left undone and to what you feel like repeating.
Macau is at the end on purpose. After two weeks in a country where almost everything has to be translated, arriving in a city you can read in Portuguese is a way of closing the trip: the signs, the street names and the cooking make sense again without effort.
What this tour asks of you
It asks no physical condition and no travel experience; it asks time, and a certain willingness to do nothing on whole days. It is an urban and water route, with short transfers and high-speed trains in reserved seats. There are no long road stages here: most of the movements take under two hours.
As a travel agency for China, what we organise concretely are the extras a trip for two usually asks for: rooms with a view reserved in advance, private dinners on the riverbank, spa treatments and massage sessions. These extras are quoted separately and confirmed before arrival, never on the spot.

01Day 1
Arrival in Guilin
Afternoon and evening. Pick-up at Guilin airport and a 1h15 transfer to Yangshuo, already among the peaks. Check-in on the bank of the Li River.
Meal. Light dinner facing the peaks, with the sound of the water.
Meals: dinner.
02Day 2
Yangshuo, slowly
Morning. No alarm set. For anyone who wants it, a short walk to the fishing village before breakfast.
Afternoon. Bicycle among the rice fields along the Yulong River, with a stop at an eight-hundred-year-old stone bridge. Pool time afterwards.
Evening. Private dinner on the riverbank, beer fish and low light.
Meals: breakfast and dinner.
03Day 3
Dawn at the viewpoint and the raft
Morning. Departure at 4:30 for the Xianggong viewpoint. Twenty minutes of staircase in the dark and sunrise over the bend of the Li River. Back for breakfast, then a free morning.
There is no shortcut: it is about twenty minutes of steps up to the walkway, done with a torch in hand, because the group coach arrives an hour later and there is no longer room. It is the only compulsory early start of the tour, and it pays because it falls on the same day as the raft, which leaves the whole afternoon free.
The first bend of the Li River, seen from the Xianggong viewpoint. The Yangshuo peaks emerge from the mist in an image that changes every ten minutes until seven in the morning.
Afternoon. Private bamboo raft on the stretch from the 20-yuan note, with just the two of you and the boatman.
Evening. Dinner at leisure on West Street or in the village, as you prefer.
Meals: breakfast.
04Day 4
Xingping and the rice fields
Morning. Xingping market and a walk through the village of grey brick houses. For anyone who preferred to stay in bed, a massage or a late breakfast.
Afternoon. Drive to the terraces with a view and an unprogrammed afternoon. We suggest a teahouse on the slope.
Evening. Meal at a family farm, with vegetables picked that moment.
Meals: breakfast and dinner.
05Day 5
Guilin to Shanghai
Morning. Transfer to Guilin station and high-speed train to Shanghai, about eight hours in first class, or a two-and-a-half-hour flight when you would rather save the day.
Afternoon. Check in at Jing’an. First walk through the plane-tree streets of Xuhui at the end of the day.
Shanghai is on this tour for the same reason it is on any China itinerary: it is the city where the country shows itself modern, with good restaurants, good teahouses and hotels with a view. We stay in the quiet ground of Jing’an, away from the noise of Nanjing Road.
Evening. Dinner of Shanghai cooking, with the reservation made by us.
Meals: breakfast and dinner.
06Day 6
The Bund and Shanghai for two
Morning. The Bund at 6:30, before the traffic and the photographers. Back to the hotel in time for breakfast.
Afternoon. Yu Garden and the old city. Then an afternoon of spa or of shopping on Nanjing Road, as you prefer.
Evening. Up the observation deck of the Shanghai Tower at nightfall — only with good visibility, checked in the morning — and a late dinner with a view.
Meals: breakfast.
07Day 7
Hangzhou and the tea fields
Morning. One-hour train to Hangzhou. Check-in and a private boat on the West Lake, the place Chinese poets have been talking about for a thousand years.
Afternoon. Longjing tea picking on the slopes, with hand drying, and a tasting at the growers’ house.
Longjing tea is picked by hand and dried on the spot, in hot woks, with the leaves still green. It is possible to try that gesture and then taste the result in the growers’ courtyard, where you stay talking about tea for an hour with nobody looking at the clock.
The Longjing tea vines on the hills west of Hangzhou. Each row is a vine; the leaves picked on this slope are the ones that make the most sought-after tea in the country.
Evening. Dinner among the tea vines, at a table set up outdoors.
Meals: breakfast and dinner.
08Day 8
Hangzhou at leisure
Morning. Free. We suggest Lingyin temple at 7am, before the groups, or staying in bed.
Afternoon. Walk along the Grand Canal and Qinghefang street, with silk and tea houses. Back to Shanghai by train at the end of the day.
Evening. Dinner of xiaolongbao at a Shanghai place more than thirty years old.
Meals: breakfast.
09Day 9
Last morning in Shanghai and flight to Macau
Morning. Tianzifang before 10am and a last circuit of the French Concession.
Afternoon. Flight to Macau, about two and a half hours, or ferry from Hong Kong, depending on schedules. Check in on the peninsula.
Evening. Macanese dinner: minchi, salt cod or African chicken, at one of the historic restaurants by Senate Square.
Meals: breakfast and dinner.
10Day 10
Portuguese Macau
Morning. Ruins of St Paul’s at 8:30 and Senate Square without the crowds. Warm egg tarts on Taipa.
Afternoon. Mount Fortress, the view over the peninsula, and a free afternoon in the antique shops and the casino, for anyone who wants it.
Behind the commercial streets Macau keeps a residential town of low houses with iron balconies, wooden shutters and barrel tiles: it is that Macau you look for on the last night, on foot, between Senate Square and Coloane.
Iron balcony and green shutters on a house in Macau's historic centre. The last two nights of the trip are spent walking streets of this kind, the ones that never make it onto postcards.
Evening. Farewell dinner in Coloane Village, facing the channel.
Meals: breakfast and lunch.
11Day 11
Hong Kong
Morning. One-hour ferry to Hong Kong. Star Ferry and the funicular up Victoria Peak.
Afternoon. Dim sum in Kowloon and a last walk through Tsim Sha Tsui. Back to Macau at the end of the day.
Evening. Light dinner and last night.
Meals: breakfast and lunch.
12Day 12
Return
Morning. Last shopping on the peninsula and transfer to Macau airport or to Hong Kong, depending on the international flight.
Anyone who wants to extend the trip usually adds two or three nights in Hong Kong, an hour away by ferry, where the contrast with the Portuguese delta is total. An extension to Yangshuo is also common, for a second visit in a following year.
Meals: breakfast.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for this tour?
For the mainland part, yes: a tourist (L) visa, applied for at least a month in advance. The final two nights in Macau require no visa of Portuguese citizens for stays of up to 30 days. We handle the mainland visa, the invitation letter and every booking the application requires.
How physically demanding is it?
Low. This is the slowest tour in our portfolio: two to three hours of walking a day, private transport between everything and a free morning every second day. The only demanding walk — the Xianggong viewpoint — is optional. We adapt the trip for pregnant travellers and for people with reduced mobility.
Can we have rooms with a view and small romantic extras?
You can, and it is what we do on most requests. Rooms with a view reserved in advance, particularly in Yangshuo and in Shanghai in October. We arrange private dinners on the riverbank, massage sessions and spa treatments, and room upgrades. These extras are quoted separately and confirmed before arrival.
Is it just the two of us, or do we join other people?
Just the two of you. It is a private tour from two people, with exclusive guide, car and boat. There are no last-day additions and no merging with other groups.
Can the dates be changed or postponed?
Yes. No cost up to 30 days before; between 30 and 15 days we retain the hotel reservations already guaranteed at non-refundable rates; under 15 days each supplier's own conditions apply. Postponing to the following year's anniversary is possible, transferring what has been paid.
